About this deal

The new EOS R5 sits in the hand like a more streamlined version of an EOS DSLR (like the 5D Mark IV). The dials and buttons have a similar placement and the front grip is large. If you already shoot Canon this will feel new, but completely familiar. The body feels tough and looks to have a robust, practical, ergonomic style that shouts, ‘modern working professional'. With our SanDisk Extreme Pro card we found the buffer cleared almost as fast as we could shoot, writing multiple frames per second when we’d finished shooting a burst of raw files. The EOS R5 will shoot 12fps using the mechanical shutter, or up to 20 with the electronic shutter. Of that, about just about 38 minutes was shot in 4K, All-I, 25fps in 10-bit Canon LOG, with the rest (a hair under 17 minutes) shot at 50fps, still in All-I and in LOG. Of note is that the shoot happened on the warmest day of the year with the ambient temperature resting at an uncomfortable 32-degrees. We didn’t see any overheating warnings. Or, the headliner: 8K video. Again, the option of shooting raw is there, at 30, 25, 24 or 23.98fps, and at a galactic bitrate of approximately 2,600Mbps. Opting to shoot H.265 files, at the same settings, lowers the bitrate to about 1,300Mbps, while H.264 lowers it further to 300Mbps.

Personally, I carry three sets of batteries for my R5 with BG-R10 battery grip as I'm a belt and suspenders type. I've never used more than one set of batteries and assume that one set of batteries should last about 1,000 shots. Also from the rumor mill, people say that the camera/lenses can malfunction below 60%. I've never seen this but carry extra batteries just in case. Of more interest to the rest of us is the EOS R5's new battery – the LP-E6NH has about 14 per cent more capacity than the slightly older LC-E6N. Those who already own Canon kit should note that the older model of battery is still compatible with the R5. You can also use a Power Delivery supply to charge the R5 via its USB-C port, saving you popping the battery out when it’s time to recharge.

Mode Button and Dial

On paper, the EOS R5 might be the best hybrid mirrorless camera on the market. It’s both high resolution and full-frame, producing 8,192 x 5,464 resolution files that weighed in, on average, at about 60MB each. Battery life is the biggest issue that's keeping me on the fence so far. Primarily interested in R5 for 90% photography, 10% video, average chimping.

Putting those slightly overhyped overheating claims to one side, it's far more useful –and fun – to look at the results that the Canon EOS R5 is capable of. 4K video is gorgeously sharp and the LOG files we shot were incredibly flexible when it came to grading.A couple of times now, I've pulled my R5 out of my camera bag only to find the OEM battery that shipped with the camera body completely drained. I'm guessing but I think the Power IQ 2.0 is not a PD type device. It is probably like the Samsung Fast Charger for android phones. My Samsung charger didn't work on my R5. According to the power meter, my camera draws about 1,400 ma @ 5.2 volts which should be possible with the Samsung. However, it doesn't seem to work. USB-C chargers have 3 or 4 modes they operate in depending on what type of device they are charging. The Power Delivery circuitry figures out what the device needs and supplies it, which is a different setup than a straight USB-C charger. Although the R5 isn't directly replacing any current model it does bring a strong set of specs to the table over a lot of its competitors. The ability to shoot 8K 12-bit video internally, IBIS up to 8 stops and 45MP images that can be captured at up to 20fps with autofocus.

It's also worth noting that a recent firmware update, version 1.3.0, has brought the very useful Canon Log 3 (C-Log 3) format, which lets you achieve wide dynamic range and means its slots nicely into workflows that also include footage shot on Canon's EOS Cinema cameras. The update also brings a slo-mo 120p option for Full HD recording, though sadly the 30-minute recording limit for video files remains. As others have already noted, this will vary greatly depending on usage. FWIW, my real-world sessions have mostly been with the 100-400 Mk II +1.4x III and I typically get 400-700 shots. I have had a few days were I got more, don't think I've ever had less. There's also a theoretical advantage in low light (see below). Naturally, landscape photographers will err towards the 45MP resolution of the EOS R5, and the R6's 20.1MP might be considered a little low, with the older EOS R offering 30.3MP. But it's important to state that there isn't necessarily a 'better' when it comes to resolution, only what suits your style of photography. Canon EOS R5 vs EOS R6: low-light performance I suspect it's possible that IF your camera had its wireless mode enabled, AND was in proximity to your phone which had also had the Canon Camera Connect App running you could have had a communications link running that drew down the battery. Lotus 7 is absolutely spot on with this statement. With the power switch off, for my 1DX and 5DS series bodies inserting a card or battery causes the activity light to flash indicating that the camera has been triggered out of its low power standby mode.

Zebra patterns are also used on the R5 to indicate exposure levels on video. Zebras can be used on the camera or on external monitors, making the camera perfect for bigger shoots, and blurring the lines between cine cameras and smaller mirrorless bodies. Canon EOS R5 vs EOS R6: In-camera editing Photographers often think that you can buy a battery and it will last forever. This is not the case. Batteries have a finite number of times that they can go through a recharge and discharge cycle. There is no exact figure as lots of things influence the expected life of a battery, but it is generally agreed that they last for between 500 and 1000 recharge/discharge cycles. As you'd hope at this price, the Canon EOS R5 brings lots of smaller treats, too. The electronic viewfinder (EVF) is superb and practically indistinguishable from the optical ones found in DSLRs, at least to our eyes. And weather-proofing is right up there with the 5D series, if not quite as indestructible as the Canon EOS 1DX Mark III. The first item is the remaining capacity of the installed battery. Special circuits and a memory chip in some batteries communicate the precise percentage of charge remaining in the battery, in 1% increments. Others use a graphic to indicate roughly how much is left. I shoot and review photos using the EVF, I've never enabled 120Hz mode, and the camera is still on ECO if that matters. That means, at the R5’s fastest continuous motor mode, you’re shooting about 1.2GB per second. In other words, make sure you’ve budgeted for extra storage, both in your camera and at home. If you’re a high-volume, high-speed filmmaker, you might find the EOS R5's heat constrictions a little onerous. But during our half-day documentary shoot, where we shot in a variety of formats, we didn't see any overheating warnings.
