About this deal

Notwithstanding my disappointment in this latest book in the “Cormoran Strike” series, I am so appreciative of the talent of J.

Nein, natürlich werde ich weiterhin die Strike Bücher lesen und nein, ich weiß nicht, wie mein Leben danach weitergehen wird, wenn die Serie aufhören wird (was vermutlich mit dem 10. The atmospheric cover image shows Cormoran and Robin standing at the seaside, facing away to look at the ocean - and also giving very little away about what to expect from the plot! Strike] was staring at the board while eating, willing his subconscious to make one of those unexpected leaps that explained everything. Allan Massie, writing for The Scotsman, described the novel as "very enjoyable" and praised Rowling as an author who "enjoys writing". Die Halbschwester von Strike, die im Vorgänger-Buch geheimnisvoll angeteast wurde, wird in diesem Buch nur als so als Mittel zum Zweck ausgenutzt.Rowling is a deft weaver of tension, all-out action and more contemplative scenes, and she has plenty of surprises up her sleeve. It’s a not-so-subtle nod to how conservatives have associated people who have blue hair with gender-non-conformity and self-expression. Robin goes undercover at the church to uncover evidence of criminality and finds herself struggling to hold onto her sense of self as the cult attempts to indoctrinate her. Eher wie ein strenges Erziehungslager für Erwachsene, aber nicht wie eine richtige Psychosekte, aber vielleicht war das auch nicht beabsichtigt.

A suffocating atmosphere of danger and menace is not an easy thing to conjure, but it's here in spades. The gradual insinuation and grinding down is quite persuasive, and you do get a constant gnawing feeling during the middle part of the book, where Robin is embedded, that she might very easily be dragged under, or that her cover will be broken. It is a familiar story in relation to any cult — helmed by a very charismatic leader, the organization attracts a lot of followers who willingly sign over all their money to the organization and subject themselves to terrible abuse and trauma in the name of “spiritual cleansing. Well, this was better than the last Strike book, which was overly complicated due to the online conversations. But it’d be remiss if we didn’t extrapolate the beliefs of this “dangerous cult” and the events in The Running Grave, to see how they truly mirror Rowling’s public downfall as a result of her controversial statements. The detectives’ attempts to find out exactly what’s going on put them both very much in harm’s way, including being subject to an attempted armed robbery, and being shot at in an car chase later on. Yet Strike discovers that beneath the surface there are deeply sinister undertones and unexplained deaths. As always, Rowling puts a lot of balls in the air, and manages to keep them all flying with admirable virtuosity. The real strength of the book is the way Rowling has created the entirely convincing and creepy world of her cult sect, the Universal Humanitarian Church. Strike and Robin remain solid, convincingly drawn characters – the best duo in detective fiction since Reginald Hill’s Dalziel and Pascoe – however garrulous their biographer has become.

The are several plots explored in the story in addition to the central plot, Strike’s relationship with his sister Prudence and his acceptance of the flighty Lucy seeing her truly without any misconceptions, and of course Charlotte and the arc of that enigmatic character drawing to a close giving Strike the clarity of what he wants in his future, the sub contractors, Midge, Barclay and Dev and the newest Littlejohn who has another mystery to be unveiled, and of course, the most efficient Pat and her quips. I enjoy that Strike bases his decisions in part on whether they will increase the chances of Robin breaking up with her new boyfriend.Strike is more at fault in this than Robin -- as one character tells Robin, "I’ve had a sort of impression, from what Corm’s told me, that you’re the emotionally intelligent side of the partnership. The agency is hired by a retired civil servant whose son, Will, was lured into joining the UHC and has all but disappeared — he no longer responds to any letters and did not even acknowledge the death of his mother, who died broken-hearted that he had disappeared from their lives. While the cases in each book are always resolved by the end, the relationship between Strike and Robin remains open-ended, continuing to evolve with each book but without the romantic resolution that would seem to be where it is headed.

Upon release, Troubled Blood became a bestseller and won the Crime and Thriller Book of the Year Award at the British Book Awards. In TRG, we read that a locksmith fitted a skeleton-key-proof lock on the street door, “with the agreement of the landlord and second floor tenant. When Billy, a troubled young man, comes to private eye Cormoran Strike's office to ask for his help investigating a crime he thinks he witnessed as a child, Strike is left deeply unsettled. K. Rowling has been in some hot water in the last few years because of some controversial remarks/tweets, but still? He let Robin borrow a tray, cups, coffee and biscuits so that she could provide them to John Bristow, the first important client of the agency. However, Pirbright is very soon found dead, and though initially it seems to be treated as a suicide by the authorities, Strike has very strong hunches this may not be the case, and begins pulling at strings to piece together connections between ex-members in an attempt to explain why. But it’s interspersed with the kind of scenes that have bedevilled the more recent Galbraith books; a seemingly endless number of seemingly endless interviews with suspects or witnesses, providing little of value to the reader except the odd veiled clue. The popular BBC murder mystery show Strike is set to film its sixth season, The Ink Black Heart, very soon - but in the meantime, JK Rowlings' seventh instalment in her bestselling series, titled The Running Grave has just been released.
