About this deal

Did you know that Enid Blyton (° 1897 - † 1968) wrote hundreds of books and at some periods even 50 books per year?

Aunt Fanny also says that Timmy is ‘as good as any grown-up at looking after you,’ which a) I don’t believe and b) is a ridiculously infantilizing way to talk to a group of fourteen-to-sixteen-year-olds. No wonder I never realized how old they’d gotten. Give me another chance,’ almost wept poor Richard, who had never in his life been spoken to like this before. He tried to hate Julian for saying such things to him—but oddly enough he couldn’t. He only respected and admired him all the more. It was first published in 1949.So Richard volunteers to hide in the boot of the car and try to escape. Big mistake on the bad guys' part, leaving the children freedom to roam the property. It's scary and dangerous, but Richard is determined and finally manages to get to a police station, after a thrilling chase. Probably, because - despite my love for these books as a kid - I can't bring myself to give more than 1*.

This leads to a chapter without the Five where Richard is on his own. Gosh, the polyphony of different voices. It’s just like reading a James Joyce book. Then rescue comes, and extra complications are included by the location of a secret room, which is a second cousin to the secret passageway usually found by the Five. Julian takes most of the credit for this adventure because he is the one sneaking around, listening in to the conversations that are going on, and finding out the secrets that the crooks are trying to keep hidden so that when the police arrive everything is brought out into the open. It is even suggested (though remember that the Five never actually grow up) that Julian, and possibly the others, will no doubt join the police force when they have finished school. This, though, is probably a no brainer because one does not go around catching as many crooks as these children do and not be brought to the attention of the powers that be. He’s also found a lake on the map, so he suggests they head for it and camp there, so they can swim before bed. Richard showed that he did indeed possess valour, spunk and courage at the end of the adventure and this experience he shared with The Famous Five no doubt shaped him into a much better chap than he otherwise would have been. This book has all the elements required for a thrilling Enid Blyton story including the Uppity and Undisciplined Outsider who needs gentle guidance onto the right path ... possibly by Julian:- Richard: "Who is there to stop us?"

Then they stop for lunch, which is egg sandwiches, sardine sandwiches, the extra ginger beers they bought, and sausage meat sandwiches for Timmy. Awww, I love that George made him sandwiches. Usually they just appear to feed him by giving him bones to gnaw on, which worries me a bit. I did find the ending a little disappointing though. Hunchy having been a really scary adversary just leaves Julian running around as the police arrive. Purton might have done that, thinking he could sweet talk the police. Hunchy, no. The book feels cut short to me, as though there's something missing between-Purton telling Hunchy to leave it, or him still looking for Julian.
